Firecracker Rice Krispie Treats

Ingredients
  

For the Treats
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 package marshmallows (10 oz)
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
For Decoration
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup blue candy melts
  • 1/4 cup red candy melts
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening divided
  • 1/4 cup star sprinkles

Equipment

  • Large saucepan
  • 9X13-inch baking pan
  • Spatula

Method
 

  1. Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray or butter. Set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and stir until well coated.
  4. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan using a buttered spatula or wax paper.
  5. Let the treats cool for at least 15 minutes.
  6. Melt the white chocolate chips with 1/2 tablespoon of vegetable shortening in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
  7. Melt the blue candy melts with 1/4 tablespoon of vegetable shortening in a separate bowl using the same method.
  8. Melt the red candy melts with the remaining 1/4 tablespoon of vegetable shortening in a third bowl using the same method.
  9. Drizzle the melted white chocolate, blue candy melts, and red candy melts over the cooled Rice Krispie treats in a random pattern to resemble a firecracker.
  10. Immediately sprinkle with star sprinkles before the candy melts set.
  11. Let the candy melts harden completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

You can also use food coloring to tint melted white chocolate red and blue if candy melts are not available.
